About Me: Mrs. Rachel Gelbard

"The Art of Teaching is the Art of Assisting DISCOVERY"
......Mark Van Doren
With over 25 years of experience as a teacher, I have had the pleasure of teaching and guiding generations of students in the field of History. My passion lies in helping, nurturing, and educating all of my students not only in history but life skills as well. Civics is a vital content area because students need to understand the value of government, citizenship, and civic responsibility. My focus is educating students about the government of the United States and how it ensures freedoms and liberty to us all. It is vital to understand that throughout history we have learned from prior mistakes and it is the PEOPLE and their VOICE that has and will demand CHANGE. Whether we're exploring the Constitution, current events, or the role of local government, my goal is to make civics relevant, interactive, and empowering for every student.
My classroom is a positive learning environment where students can feel confident in their opinion and voice, and that even though they are wrong what they say and think can be built upon. My teaching style is fun and outgoing, which allows students to be engaged to be active participants.
While I am out of the classroom I enjoy spending time with my beloved Golden Retriever , Nash. Nash has made several visits to Fulton School while I taught there. I have two children; my son is a junior in high school and my daughter attends USC in California pursuing a degree in Pre-Law. I am an avid sports fan; specifically UNC TAR HEELS. I played high school and college basketball, and coached on both levels. To keep involved in basketball I work the game or shot clock at Columbia university and Manhattan University.
My classroom is my home away form home, and a place that ALL students should and will be confortable and safe.
